Roofing for every type of home in Elmont, NY
Elmont doesn’t have one type of house, or one type of roof. Some homes here are older with steep, complicated rooflines. Some are plain, one story ranch houses. Some are newer, built near the growth around Belmont Park and UBS Arena. We look at what your specific roof is dealing with before we say what it needs.

Elmont’s houses were built in different eras, and it shows on the roof
Elmont was once known as Foster’s Meadow before it took its current name in 1882. Houses went up steadily through the early and middle parts of the last century, so the area now has a mix of Tudor and Colonial homes, single story ranch houses, and two family homes, all from different decades.
That mix matters on the roof. An older Tudor or Colonial usually has a steep roof, a brick chimney, and a dormer (the small roofed box that sticks out to hold a window). Those features create valleys (the seams where two roof sections meet) and need more flashing (the metal strips sealing those joints). A ranch usually has one big, simple roof instead. A two family home often has extra roof openings for a second kitchen or bathroom.
New building near Belmont Park and UBS Arena means newer homes now sit close to houses that are seventy or eighty years old. Two roofs can look almost the same from the sidewalk and still be built completely differently underneath.
You’ll get a place where the front of the roof is original, then a back extension went on twenty years later, then a dormer after that, probably a different contractor each time. What I really pay attention to is where those pieces meet. That’s usually where the water gets in, not the middle of a roof section.

The kinds of roofs you’ll find in Elmont
Tudor & Colonial
Steep roofs, brick chimneys, dormers. More angles means more valleys and flashing doing the work, so more spots that need checking.
Ranch
One wide, simple roof instead of several sections. Sounds like less to worry about, but a big flat expanse ages the same way everywhere at once.
Two-family
Usually needs an extra exhaust vent and sometimes a plumbing vent, since there’s a second kitchen or bathroom in the building. Each opening has to be sealed by hand.
Newer construction
Uses newer materials, which is usually fine. Problems tend to show up at the connections instead, where a wall meets the roof or a pipe comes through it.

Everything we handle on an Elmont roof
Roof Inspection
Shingles, flashing, valleys, vents, gutters, and whatever part of the attic we can reach. Most leaks start small in one of those spots.
See what we look atRoof Repair
Cracked shingles, loose flashing, one bad leak spot, fixed directly without tearing off a roof that’s otherwise fine.
How we handle repairsRoof Maintenance
A yearly visit catches loose material or cracking sealant before it turns into a leak inside the house.
What a yearly check coversRoof Replacement
Full tear-off, a look at the wood underneath, then a new system sized to your roof’s slope and drainage needs.
Inside a full replacementRoof Installation
Adding a dormer or a room changes your roof’s shape. The tricky part is always the new seam, not the flat sections.
Additions and dormersEmergency Roofing
Fallen branch, storm damage, a hole letting rain in. We respond fast, temporary fix first if needed, proper fix once things calm down.
Get emergency helpThe spot where two roof sections meet is usually the real problem
Elmont’s houses have been added onto slowly over decades: a back room, a second floor, a dormer, a closed-in porch. Every addition creates a new seam, and if that seam wasn’t built correctly, water gets underneath the roof even when the surface still looks fine.
That’s why we check where sections meet, not just the middle of each one. The joint fails first, almost always.
The leak pattern we see most in older Elmont homes
It usually starts as a stain near an upstairs wall or a dormer after a hard rain, water getting in through the flashing or that same seam. Left alone, it works into the wood and insulation underneath. It shows up more here than in a lot of towns, since so many Elmont houses were built up in stages.
What’s around your house also matters
Hempstead Turnpike
Hempstead Turnpike runs past a mix of houses, stores, and restaurants. Farther north, Belmont Park and UBS Arena have brought a lot of new building and traffic near the Queens border. If you’re close to that, debris and changed drainage nearby can affect your own roof.
Flat and low slope roofs
Some of those Turnpike businesses use flat or low slope roofs instead of shingles. If that’s your property, ask about a roof and drainage check made for that kind of roof.
Inland weather
Elmont sits inland, so it skips the ocean exposure some Nassau towns get, but it still sees Long Island’s regular weather. Wind can loosen shingles. Freezing temperatures build up ice where air isn’t moving well under the roof. Heavy rain is usually what exposes a weak spot, old flashing, a blocked gutter, a valley draining badly.
A note on permits
Elmont is a hamlet, not its own village, so roofing work goes through the Town of Hempstead Building Department. A simple repair usually doesn’t need much. Anything that changes the framing or the roofline usually does. We check what’s needed before work starts.

Crews trained by GAF
Trained on the parts most people never see, the layers under the shingles and the venting. Usually the parts that decide if an addition stays dry for decades or leaks by year three.

Elmont homeowners often ask
Does living near Belmont Park change what my roof needs?
Mostly it’s nearby construction, debris, and drainage that may have shifted as the area developed. The track and arena don’t damage roofs on their own, but the redevelopment makes a specific check worth it.
My roof has a few different shingle colors. Was it repaired badly?
Not necessarily. It usually just means a section was done at a different time. What matters is whether the materials work together and the seams are sealed properly.
Does building out part of the roof for extra space usually cause leaks?
It can. Dormers and additions create new seams and flashing points. Leaks start there if they weren’t installed carefully, not out in the open roof.
Do you inspect two-family homes differently?
Same process, but two family homes have extra vents and openings, each one a possible entry point, so we check all of them.
Is flooding something I need to worry about in Elmont?
Less than towns closer to the water. Elmont sits inland. Heavy rain can still overwhelm a gutter, so it’s worth checking after a big storm.
